Spring/Poorneet Retaining Wall Workshop
Help us build a simple retaining wall with sleepers to build our berry bed. Join farmer B and carpenter Zee to learn what to think about and what materials to use when working with sloping land.
Time & Location
18 Sept 2023, 9:30 am – 12:00 pm
Oakhill Food Justice Farm, 233 Tyler St, Preston VIC 3072, Australia
About the event
As we arrive into Poorneet (tadpole) season spanning from September to October, the weather warms up, rain continues and day and night are of equal length. Tadpoles fill the waterways and snakes and lizards wake and become active.
As the weather warms up, we're focusing on building jobs to prepare Oakhill for the warmer growing season. Join us as we tackle an east facing slope, a trickier place to grow, and build a retaining wall with Farmer B (StrEAT, CERES, Collingwood Childrens Farm and Sustain's newest lease-farmer out in Alphington) and carpenter Zee.
You will learn how to:
- assess the site and consider drainage, bed height, accessibility
- discuss materials used in the build for the wall, for drainiage and fill
- discuss how the temporary nature of Oakhill will contribute to the decision-making of building a retaining wall
- physically build the wall and the berry bed
For gardeners of all experience levels. This is a 2.5-hour workshop that includes a 30-minute questions and answers session, light catering and a warm cup of farm tea.
Tickets are free with an option for a donation to Oakhill Food Justice Farm.
