About the event

Join us for a farm chat about food sovereignty in Detroit with some farm salad.

We're kicking off the first community soup/salad night of the year with international guest speaker Ashley Atkinson, who joins us during a short visit to Naarm/Melbourne. Ashley (she/her) is the co-Director of Keep Growing Detroit, whose mission is to cultivate a food sovereign city where the majority of fruits and vegetables consumed by Detroiters are grown by residents within the city’s limits.

In addition to supporting the farm and market operations team at KGD,  Ashley is responsible for fundraising and organizational learning via research and evaluation. She has worked in the field of community  gardening, urban greening, and vacant land reuse for more than 20 years  and has provided technical assistance to groups interested in starting  or expanding urban agriculture and social entrepreneurship projects all  over the world. You can learn more about Ashley and KGD here:

Farmer Jemma and some volunteers will harvest some produce from the farm and make some salads and drinks to share. We would love some help in the kitchen and to setup and clean up afterwards. There is no fee to attend this event, however if you're able to, please contribute a minimum suggested donation of $5 to cover costs for basic groceries for this and future community meals.

Join us on Wednesday, 21st February from 5:00 to 6:30pm, come share some salad, hear an update from Jemma and Nick, and taste what's in season on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country!

Accessibility: Oakhill Farm is accessible via wheelchair from 233 Tyler Street Preston. The farmhouse has wheelchair accessible ramps to enter the farmhouse, however the bathrooms are not wheelchair accessible. Some areas of the farm are accessible via concrete pathways and uneven earth and mulched surfaces. The closest 24hour accessible bathroom is at Northland Shopping Centre, 10 Murray Road Preston. There are various rooms indoors at Oakhill with desks, chairs and armchairs suitable for low sensory needs.
